Two 18-wheelers crashed nearly 10 minutes apart in Houston on Monday.

Two 18-wheeler accidents were reported early Tuesday morning caused significant delays for commuters on Houston’s North Freeway (I-45) northbound.

According to Houston TranStar, the first crash occurred around 6:36 a.m. near SH 249 and Mount Houston Road. Just ten minutes later, a second collision was reported several miles down the freeway near Greens Road. Both incidents involved two vehicles and were cleared shortly afterward, but not before causing a major traffic slowdown during the morning rush hour.

Authorities have not released details about the causes of either crash or whether anyone was injured. Even without confirmed injuries, these types of collisions are reminders of how dangerous Houston’s major freeways can be during peak travel hours. Sudden braking, lane changes, and heavy congestion on I-45 often lead to multi-vehicle accidents that can leave victims facing serious medical and financial burdens.

Why 18-Wheeler Accidents Are So Common on the North Freeway

The North Freeway connects several major commercial hubs and industrial areas. This high volume of freight movement increases the risk of collisions involving large trucks. Common causes of 18-wheeler accidents include:

  • Driver fatigue or inattention: Long hours behind the wheel can cause slow reaction times and drowsy driving.
  • Improper loading: A trailer that is overloaded or unbalanced can shift weight suddenly, leading to rollovers or jackknife crashes.
  • Speeding or unsafe lane changes: Truck drivers sometimes exceed safe speeds to meet tight delivery schedules, making it difficult to stop in time.
  • Mechanical failures: Worn tires or neglected brake systems can quickly lead to loss of control on busy highways.

When an 18-wheeler collides with a passenger car, the occupants of the smaller vehicle often suffer the most severe injuries. Victims may face broken bones, internal injuries, spinal cord damage, or traumatic brain injuries that require long-term care.

Federal Regulations for 18-Wheeler Drivers and Companies

Commercial truck drivers and their employers are subject to strict federal safety regulations set by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). These rules are designed to prevent 18-wheeler accidents caused by fatigue, poor maintenance, and unsafe driving practices. Key regulations include:

  • Hours-of-Service limits: Truck drivers are restricted to specific driving hours and must take mandatory rest breaks to prevent fatigue.
  • Vehicle inspection and maintenance standards: Carriers must regularly inspect and repair their trucks to ensure they are roadworthy.
  • Drug and alcohol testing requirements: Drivers are required to undergo random and post-accident testing to ensure they are fit to operate a commercial vehicle.
  • Driver qualification standards: Employers must verify each driver’s commercial license and driving record before assigning long-haul routes.
