A construction worker suffered a fatal fall Friday afternoon at the Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Splashtown in Spring, Texas, according to a news report from the Houston Chronicle. Workers had been adding a slide at the popular water park, and the worker accidentally fell from a structure, authorities reported.
The victim was an employee of Trevino Industries, a metal fabrication company, according to a statement from Six Flags. Splashtown, which is in the 21300 block of the North Freeway, is currently closed, with plans to reopen in May once renovations are complete. The park was formerly known as Wet ’n’ Wild Splashtown.
Texas Is No Stranger to Fatal Workplace Accidents
Hundreds of innocent workers die each year in Texas in on-the-job accidents, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2017, more than a third of all work-related deaths in Texas were in the construction, extraction, installation, maintenance, and repair occupations.
Although construction work can be dangerous, employers have a duty to properly train workers and provide proper safety equipment. No worker should be subject to injury on the job, and no family should have to suffer the tragic loss of a loved one in a fatal workplace accident.
What to Do If Your Family Member Was Killed in a Construction Accident
Unexpected deaths can leave families with overwhelming emotional and financial burdens. When insurance companies get involved, the pressure can be even greater. Insurance companies will often try to get grieving families to accept a small settlement or sign away their legal rights before they have had time to process what happened.
There are several steps your family can take to shield yourself and protect your legal rights during this difficult time:
- Save all medical bills, funeral bills, and other paperwork related to your loved one’s death.
- If you know the names of any coworkers who may have witnessed the accident, write them down.
- Do not give a written or recorded statement to any insurance company, and do not cash any checks from the insurer.
- Speak with a trusted Houston wrongful death lawyer as soon as possible. Your lawyer can manage communication with your loved one’s employer and insurance companies while crafting your legal claim. Your attorney’s goal will be to take the pressure off your family.
