Two young children lost their mother on Friday in a horrific multi-vehicle crash on the North Freeway, which also left another man dead and forced one victim to jump off the side of an overpass to keep from being hit, ABC 13 reported.
The tragedy began in the early morning hours when a family traveling in a Lincoln Navigator that was towing a trailer got a flat tire on Interstate 45 at Rankin. The SUV, which was carrying a mother, father, and their two children (1 and 3 years old), pulled over. A Mazda then crashed into the back of the trailer.
The driver of the Mazda and the mother both got out of their vehicles. An approaching Chevy Silverado then swerved to avoid the crash, slammed into a wall, and spun into the middle of the freeway. Meanwhile, another driver stopped to help, getting out of his vehicle to check on the victims.
An Amazon Prime truck then crashed into all four vehicles and hit the mother and the Mazda driver who were outside their vehicles. The man who had stopped to help, identified as Abdullah Baidas, was forced to jump off the overpass as the Amazon truck barreled toward them. He was seriously injured but was able to call 911 for help.
The freeway was shut down until about 9:30 a.m. as police investigated the deadly crash. The children in the SUV, who were both safely buckled in, and a man were taken to a nearby hospital. No charges were immediately filed.
Amazon released a statement about the collision: “This is a terrible incident and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with all involved. We will work with law enforcement and the carrier as they investigate.”
