Two workers were hurt when an oil tank exploded Tuesday at the Pelican Island Storage Terminal at 3801 GTI Boulevard in Galveston, local news reported. Crews were thought to have been welding near the oil tank at the storage terminal when the tank exploded.
The explosion forced Texas A&M University in Galveston, which is near the terminal, to issue a shelter-in-place order for those on campus. The Galveston Fire Department responded to the scene to fight to the fire, using foam cannons on the crude oil tank.
The Pelican Island Storage Facility has the capacity to hold 500,000 barrels of heavy fuel storage, carbon black oil, vacuum gas oil, and fuel oil cutterstock, according to Enjett LLC, which leases the terminal for oil blending operations. The tank that exploded Tuesday could hold 2 million gallons of heavy crude oil products.
Common Causes of Accidents Involving Oil Tanks
Unfortunately, in Texas, we see far too many accidents involving explosions at oil refineries and storage terminals. Often, workers are seriously injured or killed in these preventable accidents.
There are many factors that can lead to explosions and other accidents at oil refineries and storage facilities. Some common problems include:
- Failing to follow safety regulations from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) or the facility itself
- Failing to properly maintain equipment at the facility
- Failing to conduct regular safety drills
- Improper storage of hazardous materials
After an explosion accident like the one at the Pelican Island Storage Terminal, it is crucial that an independent investigation is launched immediately to determine the cause, identify who is responsible, and prevent future catastrophes. Because these accidents can be so complicated, victims should always seek advice from an experienced refinery explosion lawyer.
