One person was killed and two more were seriously injured when the KMCO chemical plant in Crosby, Texas, caught fire last week, news stations reported. Meanwhile, residents of the area were warned to shelter in place, with local schools turning off heating and AC units and sealing doors to protect children while the air was monitored for dangerous chemicals.
The fire at the KMCO facility at 16503 Ramsey Road was believed to begin in a transfer line near a tank containing isobutylene, then spread to a storage building that housed combustible chemicals, news outlets reported. It comes less than a month after a massive fire at the ITC chemical plant in Deer Park, which consumed six tanks and led to shelter-in-place orders for local residents.
Although firefighters were able to put out the blaze at the KMCO plant the same day, the deadly industrial accident was a somber reminder of the dangers industrial workers face at chemical plants throughout the Houston area.
