Zantac Lawsuit Attorney in Houston

Zantac, a brand name of the drug ranitidine, has been commonly sold as a heartburn medication since the early 1980s. By 1988, it was one of the world’s best-selling drugs ever and among the first commercially manufactured drugs to ever reach one billion dollars in yearly sales. Several generic alternatives of Zantac became available in 1997. Nine years later, it was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for over-the-counter sale, further increasing its already-widespread use.

Unfortunately, research has strongly suggested that Zantac and its generic equivalents contain dangerous levels of cancer-causing substances. This means that millions of users may have been
exposed to unacceptable levels of risk for decades without even knowing it.

If you are a cancer patient who regularly took Zantac or a generic equivalent, don’t hesitate to contact The Law Offices of Hilda Sibrian™ for a free consultation. Our award-winning attorneys are actively
representing individuals in Zantac lawsuits. We will skillfully and assertively pursue the justice and compensation you’re owed.

Problems with Zantac and Ranitidine

If you used Zantac or a ranitidine generic, it may be helpful to understand what made these drugs so dangerous. Thanks to investigative testing by American and European regulators, we now know that
ranitidine-containing medicines release hazardous levels of a substance known as N- Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) over time.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), NDMA is a naturally-occurring organic chemical and a “potent carcinogen,” which means it is especially likely to cause cancer. In a press
release, the FDA noted that many of us are commonly exposed to NDMA in our diets, but not at high enough levels to increase our risk of cancer.

However, the FDA went on to explain that sustained exposure to high doses of NDMA may increase a person’s risk of cancer – and that ranitidine medications may contain “unacceptable” levels of the probable carcinogen. Pharmaceutical test results demonstrated that the NDMA levels in ranitidine- containing medications increase over time as they are stored, especially when the drugs are exposed to
higher temperatures.

This means that Zantac and dozens of ranitidine generics for years sat in pharmacies and on store shelves, slowly becoming more and more hazardous to U.S. patients each day. According to Reuters, even though pharmaceutical regulators detected hazardous amounts of NDMA in ranitidine-containing drugs as early as July of 2018, the first voluntary Zantac recalls did not go into effect until late 2019.

As American consumers, we rightfully expect high standards from the manufacturers of drugs we use to maintain our health and well-being. Zantac developers and other ranitidine manufacturers were responsible for providing safe products to their users. Instead, their negligence exposed millions of innocent people to serious and potentially fatal risks.

How Many Products Contain Ranitidine?

Before they were pulled from store shelves, Zantac and ranitidine generics were widely sold for prescription and over-the-counter use under a variety of names. Most ranitidine products were sold as tablets or caplets available in 75mg, 150mg, or 300mg dosages. Syrups made with liquid ranitidine were manufactured as well. Some of the most popular ranitidine-containing products in the U.S. include:

  • Zantac
  • Zantac 75
  • Zantac 150
  • Zantac Maximum Strength
  • Zantac Cool Mint
  •  Taladine
  • Deprizine FusePaq
  • Wal-Zan 75
  • Wal-Zan 150
  • Heartburn Relief
  • Acid Control
  • Acid Reducer
  • Ranitidine Hydrochloride

Even if you haven’t taken any of these drugs, it’s still a good idea to contact your physician or pharmacist to make sure none of your current or previous medications contain ranitidine.

Illnesses Potentially Associated with the Consumption of Contaminated Products

Additional research from the EPA suggests that Zantac users who were exposed to NDMA were at increased risk of the following health hazards:

  • Liver trauma, with symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and headaches
  • Necrosis and other severe tissue damage to the liver
  • Low blood platelet counts
  • Increased risk of cancer

Ranitidine users may be more likely to suffer from the following types of cancer:

  • Bladder
  • Breast
  • Colorectal
  • Esophageal
  • Intestinal
  • Kidney
  • Liver
  • Lung
  • Prostate
  • Stomach
  • Testicular
  • Uterine
