What Should You Do After an Industrial Accident?

After an industrial accident, it’s crucial to follow these five steps:

  1. Seek medical attention and a written diagnosis for any injuries.
  2. Call your injury attorneys at The Law Offices of Hilda Sibrian™.
  3. Do not sign any documents or make any statements until you have consulted with your attorney.
  4. Identify any witnesses to your accident and get their names and contact information.
  5. Avoid posting about your accident on social media. (It’s recommended that you set your profiles to private and only accept friend requests from unknown people once your case is resolved.)

Who Can Be Held Responsible for Industrial Accident?

Many of these accidents are due to negligent behavior by companies or individuals (such as contractors or supervisors). Common causes of industrial accidents due to negligence include:

  • Companies need to conduct regular maintenance checks on tools and machinery.
  • Inadequate safety training for workers on protocols and the safe use of tools and machinery.
  • Lack of proper protective equipment for specific tasks, such as face shields, helmets, or gloves.
  • Work areas lack necessary safety signs to warn workers of potential hazards.
  • Defective or faulty structures and equipment, like scaffolding or lifts, are used in specific jobs.

Case Studies & Statistics

In 2022, private industry employers reported 2.8 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses, a 7.5% increase from 2021, Bureau of Labor Statistics from the U.S. Department of Labor reports. This increase was driven by injuries, up 4.5% to 2.3 million cases, and diseases, up 26.1% to 460,700 cases. Notably, the increase in illnesses was primarily due to a surge in respiratory illness cases, which rose by 35.4% to reach 365,000 cases in 2022.

The total recordable cases (TRC) incidence rate in private industry in 2022 was 2.7 cases per 100 FTE workers. Injuries remained steady at 2.3 cases per 100 FTE workers from 2021 to 2022. However, illness rates increased in 2022, with private industry employers reporting a rate of 45.2 cases per 10,000 FTE workers compared to 37.7 cases in 2021. This rise was primarily attributed to increased respiratory illness rates, climbing from 27.8 cases per 10,000 FTE workers in 2021 to 35.8 cases in 2022.

Furthermore:

  • Respiratory illnesses in the private health care and social assistance sector increased from 145,300 in 2021 to 199,700 cases in 2022, a 37.5% increase.
  • In 2022, the rate of respiratory illnesses in grocery stores was 190.4 cases per 10,000 FTE workers, up from 66.8 in 2021.
  • During the 2021-2022, 502,380 workplace musculoskeletal disorders resulted in at least one day away from work. These cases occurred at an annualized incidence rate of 25.3 musculoskeletal disorders per 10,000 FTE workers.
