The outcome could easily have been far worse.<\/p>\n<p>The first accident occurred Wednesday evening, July 22, 2026, when a car left an elevated HOV lane near the Southwest Freeway and Beltway 8. On Thursday morning, an 18-wheeler was left hanging over the edge of the Katy Freeway near the Grand Parkway.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear at this time what caused both vehicles to lose control.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>On This Page<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#southwest\">Car Falls from Southwest Freeway HOV Lane<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#katy\">18-Wheeler Hangs Over Katy Freeway<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#danger\">Why Elevated Freeway Crashes Are So Dangerous<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#fault\">Who May Be Liable?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#help\">Injured in a Houston Highway Accident?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a name=\"southwest\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Car Falls from Southwest Freeway HOV Lane Near Beltway 8<\/h2>\n<p>At approximately 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, a vehicle traveling along the elevated HOV system near the northbound Southwest Freeway and Beltway 8 reportedly lost control.<\/p>\n<p>Preliminary information from METRO police indicated that the vehicle struck the HOV barrier, became airborne and landed on the main lanes of the Southwest Freeway below.<\/p>\n<p>Three women were inside the car. All three were transported to a hospital and are expected to survive, according to Houston police. Images from the scene showed bystanders and emergency personnel working to remove the occupants from the badly damaged vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>The crash closed the northbound lanes of U.S. 59 between West Bellfort and Beltway 8. The freeway reopened several hours later.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators had not announced what caused the driver to lose control. Speeding, distraction, an unsafe lane change, mechanical failure and contact with another vehicle are among the issues investigators may examine, but no cause should be assumed before the investigation is complete.<\/p>\n<p>The incident was especially alarming because it was not the first time a vehicle has fallen from an elevated HOV structure in this area. In January 2025, a Jeep also left an elevated HOV lane near Beltway 8 and landed on the Southwest Freeway\u2019s main lanes, causing additional crashes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><a href=\"#top\">Back to top<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a name=\"katy\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>18-Wheeler Left Hanging Over Katy Freeway Near SH 99<\/h2>\n<p>Less than a day after the Southwest Freeway crash, first responders were called to another scene.<\/p>\n<p>At approximately 11 a.m. Thursday, July 23, a collision involving three vehicles \u2014 two 18-wheelers and a passenger vehicle \u2014 occurred on the eastbound Katy Freeway near SH 99, also known as the Grand Parkway or Lanier Parkway.<\/p>\n<p>One of the tractor-trailers crashed through or over the freeway\u2019s edge and was left hanging from the elevated roadway.<\/p>\n<p>Two people suffered injuries described by officials as minor and were transported to a nearby hospital. The driver of the truck hanging over the freeway was reportedly not injured.<\/p>\n<p>Fuel also leaked from one of the vehicles. Houston TranStar initially classified the incident as a <a href=\"https:\/\/hildasibrian.com\/en\/blog\/garden-grove-chemical-tank-emergency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hazardous-material spill<\/a>, although fire officials said the truck was carrying furniture and that no other hazardous substances were released.<\/p>\n<p>The crash blocked multiple eastbound lanes for much of the day. All lanes reportedly reopened at approximately 5 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The Harris County Sheriff\u2019s Office was still investigating the cause of the collision as of Thursday evening.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><a href=\"#top\">Back to top<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a name=\"danger\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Why Houston Flyover and Elevated Freeway Crashes Are So Dangerous<\/h2>\n<p>The drivers in this week&#8217;s flyover ramp crashes were lucky.\u00a0Many Houston freeway connections rise several stories above adjacent roads.<\/p>\n<p>Once a vehicle loses traction or begins rotating, a concrete barrier may be the only thing that separates its occupants from the roadway below. Certainly, the concrete barriers slowed down the 18-wheeler enough to keep it from falling completely.<\/p>\n<p>However, things also could have been worse. An 18-wheeler creates additional risks because of its weight and size. A tractor-trailer hanging from an overpass can spill fuel or cargo, damage the roadway and fall into active traffic underneath.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that no deaths were immediately reported in either of this week\u2019s crashes is remarkable, but it does not make the accidents minor. The victims may still have suffered serious injuries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><a href=\"#top\">Back to top<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a name=\"fault\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Who May Be Liable When a Vehicle Goes Over a Freeway Barrier?<\/h2>\n<p>The vehicle that crosses a barrier is not necessarily the vehicle that caused the accident.<\/p>\n<p>A driver may lose control after being rear-ended, sideswiped or forced off the road by another motorist. In a commercial truck accident, investigators must also consider the conduct of the trucking company and other businesses responsible for loading, inspecting or maintaining the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Potentially responsible parties may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A driver who was speeding, distracted or following too closely;<\/li>\n<li>A motorist who made an unsafe lane change or forced another vehicle from its lane;<\/li>\n<li>A commercial trucking company that failed to properly hire, train or supervise its driver;<\/li>\n<li>A maintenance provider responsible for defective brakes, tires or steering components;<\/li>\n<li>A cargo company that improperly loaded or secured a trailer; or<\/li>\n<li>A public agency or contractor if a dangerous roadway condition contributed to the crash.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Texas law requires drivers following another vehicle to maintain enough clear distance to stop safely without colliding with the vehicle ahead or veering into another vehicle, object or person. An injured person\u2019s compensation may be reduced by that person\u2019s assigned percentage of fault, and someone found more than 50 percent responsible generally cannot recover damages.
