Just days after victims of the deadly Oak Cliff apartment explosion filed suit<\/a>, newly released information shows that damage to underground natural gas infrastructure is not an isolated problem in Texas. It is a recurring statewide safety issue that puts families, workers, tenants, and entire neighborhoods at risk.<\/p>\n

The May 28, 2026 explosion at The Clyde Apartments in Dallas killed three people, including a child, and injured several others. The blast happened while Dallas Fire-Rescue crews were responding to reports of a gas leak. According to earlier reports, firefighters were preparing to enter the building and begin evacuating residents when the explosion tore through the complex and sparked a five-alarm fire.<\/p>\n

Initial reports have pointed to construction-related work near the property. KERA reported that Atmos Energy told the outlet a construction crew unrelated to Atmos had damaged a natural gas pipeline near 409 E. 9th Street in Dallas. KERA also reported that the prospective purchaser of the apartment complex had contracted for a geotechnical report, and that reports indicated a boring rig may have damaged the pipeline.<\/p>\n

While the investigation into the Oak Cliff explosion remains ongoing, the tragedy has raised broader questions about how often underground gas lines are damaged during excavation projects across Texas.<\/p>\n

Thousands of Underground Utility Lines Are Damaged in Texas<\/h2>\n

According to a KERA analysis<\/a> of Railroad Commission of Texas pipeline accident and incident data, excavators in Texas damaged pipelines more than 4,800 times between January 1 and May 31, 2026. More than 1,000 of those incidents occurred in Dallas, Tarrant, Collin, and Denton counties.<\/p>\n

That number is alarming because every damaged gas line has the potential to become dangerous. Not every line strike causes an explosion, but a broken or punctured gas line can allow natural gas to escape into the surrounding area. If that gas collects underground, inside a building, or in another enclosed space, it may ignite from something as small as an appliance, electrical spark, tool, or pilot light.<\/p>\n

This is what makes excavation line damage so serious. A mistake that starts underground can quickly become a disaster for people above ground.<\/p>\n

Why the 811 System Matters<\/h2>\n

Texas has a \u201ccall before you dig<\/a>\u201d system that is supposed to help prevent these incidents. Before excavation begins, contractors are generally required to contact the state\u2019s One-Call Notification Center so underground utilities can be identified and marked.<\/p>\n

KERA reported that Texas law requires excavators to notify the One-Call Notification Center at least 48 hours before digging. The same report noted that even homeowners are required to call before projects involving digging, including work such as installing a fence, mailbox, sprinkler system, or planting a tree.<\/p>\n

The reason is simple: many gas lines, water lines, sewer lines, fiber optic cables, and electrical lines are buried below streets, sidewalks, yards, and construction sites. Without accurate marking, a contractor may not know what is underneath the surface until equipment strikes it.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, KERA\u2019s analysis found that many pipeline strikes occurred even though excavators had not contacted the notification system before digging. Statewide, about one-third of excavators who struck pipelines during the first five months of 2026 had not called in before beginning work. In Dallas, Tarrant, Denton, and Collin counties, 177 of more than 1,000 reported pipeline incidents involved excavators who had not notified the state before digging.<\/p>\n

Why Gas Line Strikes Still Happen<\/h2>\n

Some gas line accidents happen because a contractor fails to follow required safety steps<\/a>. Others happen even after a call is made, because underground infrastructure can be difficult to locate.<\/p>\n

Older neighborhoods may have pipes that were installed decades ago. In some areas, records may be incomplete, outdated, or inaccurate. KERA cited experts explaining that non-metallic lines can be especially difficult to identify underground, and that locating equipment may not always provide a clear picture of where a line runs.<\/p>\n

That does not mean contractors are free from responsibility. It means excavation work must be handled carefully from the beginning. Contractors may need to review utility records, wait for proper markings, use safe digging techniques, confirm line locations through potholing, and stop work immediately if they smell gas, hear hissing, see bubbling soil, or notice any other sign of a possible leak.<\/p>\n

When companies rush, ignore warnings, skip notification requirements, or fail to coordinate with utility operators, they place entire apartment complexes, homes, and businesses in danger.<\/p>\n

Who Can Be Responsible for a Gas Explosion?<\/h2>\n

After a gas explosion<\/a>, determining fault requires a detailed investigation. Attorneys may review excavation permits, 811 records, utility maps, construction contracts, inspection records, maintenance reports, witness statements, and communications between contractors, property owners, developers, and utility companies.<\/p>\n
