Over the past few years, Texas authorities have made a concerted effort to improve road safety. However, after reviewing many accident reports on Accident Data Center, we've identified three major Houston highways that are still very dangerous breeding grounds for car accidents.

Interstate 610

Interstate 610 is inner most of the three beltways that divide Houston. It forms a 38-mile loop around the downtown sector of Houston.

The North Loop of I-610 is especially dangerous and sees its fair share of rollovers  like the one that occurred in July 2015, injuring the vehicle’s occupants and shutting down two lanes of traffic.

Beltway 8/Sam Houston Parkway

The Beltway 8/Sam Houston Parkway is a state highway contained within Harris County. It loops 83 miles around the Houston area. Accidents are all too common on this stretch of road. A search of recent accidents on Beltway 8 shows 10 accidents that caused a fatality or serious injury in the last year alone.

Rear-end collisions are a common occurrence on Sam Houston Parkway, like the one that took the life of a woman sitting in her stalled car. She was killed when a speeding pickup truck driver rear-ended her car.

Wrong-way crashes also pose a danger on Beltway 8, often caused by distracted or intoxicated drivers. An intoxicated motorcyclist heading the wrong way lost his life after crashing into a police car in July of 2015.

Intersections on Sam Houston Parkway also pose a danger to drivers. In fact, data from the Texas Department of Transportation shows that the intersection of Sam Houston Parkway and Bissonnet Street is the most dangerous in Texas. The intersection saw 335 crashes between 2012 and 2015 alone.

According to the same data, eight of the 10 most dangerous intersections in Houston involve the Sam Houston Parkway (numbers 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 on the list).

State Highway 99/Grand Parkway

State Highway 99/Grand Parkway is Houston's outer beltway with three out of 11 segments completed. Once all 11 are completed, it will be the longest beltway in the U.S. Until then, construction will be ongoing and create numerous hazards for drivers each day.

Rear-end collisions on State Highway 99/Grand Parkway cause numerous injuries and fatalities each year, such as the multi-vehicle rear-end truck accident that took the life of a young boy and injured four others.

What caused many of these accidents?

While all the accidents that occurred on these three dangerous highways had specific causes, many involved alcohol, distracted driving, and/or speeding.

Drivers can also cause accidents if they:

  • Text and drive
  • Do not get enough sleep
  • Are not familiar with the road itself (can lead to wrong-way crashes or distraction from a GPS device)
  • Drive aggressively
  • Fail to control their speed in hazardous conditions (e.g., roadway hazards, icy conditions, rain, snow, etc.)

How can I stay safe on these hazardous Houston highways?

By following all of the tips above, you can keep yourself from causing an accident. But how do you stay out of accidents that other negligent drivers cause?

You cannot avoid every accident, but by learning to drive defensively, avoiding drivers you believe may be intoxicated or angry, and by always keeping your entire focus on the road around you.

What can I do if I am involved in an accident?
