Despite what you may have heard, Cinco de Mayo is most definitely not the Mexican version of Independence Day. In fact, Mexico’s national Independence Day is September 16 and is one of the country’s most important holidays, while Cinco de Mayo is barely celebrated at all outside of the United States.
Many people don’t realize that Houston actually played a crucial role in establishing Cinco de Mayo as an unofficial (but much loved) U.S. holiday.
